Module 9 - Business & Retail Components

This module focuses on the day-to-day management of an optometric practice. Students will learn various techniques for communicating and working with a variety of patients. Administrative processes such a maintaining inventory, billing, and working with insurance providers will also be covered. This module also includes a brief introduction to human resource management and marketing. 

Upon completion of this module, the optometric assistant will be able to: 

  • Use patient-centred communication techniques with diverse patients. 
  • Support accessible and inclusive patient care. 
  • Respond professionally to patient concerns and complaints. 
  • Explain basic practice management and workplace responsibilities. 
  • Guide patients through frame selection and eyewear purchasing. 
  • Apply basic sales and service techniques that support patient trust, informed decision-making, and long-term loyalty. 
  • Explain key inventory management practices. 
  • Describe vision care plans, insurance, and third-party billing. 
  • Explain how marketing and social media support practice growth.
