The Basics - An Introductory Module
Curious about a career in optical? This stand-alone course introduces students to core optometric concepts — no optometrist sponsorship or prior experience required. Also ideal for staff who haven't taken the CCOA program, or anyone new to optometry.
Fee: $200
Upon completion of this module, the student will be able to:
- Differentiate between the roles of an optometrist, ophthalmologist, optician, and optometric assistant.
- Describe the key components of a comprehensive eye examination.
- Identify basic ocular structures and summarize their primary functions in vision.
- Explain common refractive errors and corrective lens options.
- Interpret basic spectacle prescription terminology, including sphere, cylinder, axis, add, prism, and common abbreviations.
- Compare ophthalmic lens designs, materials, and enhancements based on prescription needs, visual demands, and lifestyle factors.
- Apply basic frame fitting principles, measurements, and patient-centred considerations when assisting with eyewear selection.
- Identify common ophthalmic instruments and describe their purpose.
Important Notes:
- Students have six weeks to complete this module.
- Completion includes a 30-question multiple-choice quiz.
- Credit does not carry over toward the full CCOA program, should the student choose to pursue it later.
