The Basics is a stand-alone tool geared towards staff who have not taken the full CCOA program. This course serves as an introduction to the full CCOA program and also as an introduction to Optometry for those who are new to the field. This module will introduce basic optometric concepts that are further elaborated on in the CCOA program's subsequent modules.
Upon completion of this module, the optometric assistant will be able to:
- Differentiate between the roles of an optometrist, ophthalmologist, optician, and optometric assistant.
- Describe the key components of a comprehensive eye examination.
- Identify basic ocular structures and summarize their primary functions in vision.
- Explain common refractive errors and corrective lens options.
- Interpret basic spectacle prescription terminology, including sphere, cylinder, axis, add, prism, and common abbreviations.
- Compare ophthalmic lens designs, materials, and enhancements based on prescription needs, visual demands, and lifestyle factors.
- Apply basic frame fitting principles, measurements, and patient-centred considerations when assisting with eyewear selection.
- Identify common ophthalmic instruments and describe their purpose.
