Module 5 - Ophthalmic Lenses

This module provides a brief overview of fundamental optical principles and how these are used in ophthalmic lenses to correct vision problems. Different lens designs, treatments, and materials are also discussed, as well as specialty lenses and troubleshooting patient complaints.

Upon completion of this module, the optometric assistant will be able to:

  • Explain how basic optical principles affect ophthalmic lens performance.
  • Identify common lens forms and prescription components.
  • Apply basic optical calculations used in dispensing (transposition, spherical equivalent, near or intermediate power, vertex distance effects, Prentice’s Rule, etc.)
  • Compare lens materials based on optics, safety, comfort, and patient needs.
  • Select appropriate lens materials, designs, and treatments for common prescriptions.
  • Describe fitting, measurement, verification, and delivery practices for ophthalmic lenses.
  • Troubleshoot common patient lens concerns and communicate solutions clearly.
