Module 2 - Pre-testing

This module focuses on the preliminary optometric tests and procedures that form an important part of the comprehensive eye examination. Case history, visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, color vision, and stereopsis are all covered, along with additional procedures such as eye drop administration and infection control. Students will be introduced to key instruments such as the refractor, keratometer, and non-contact tonometer. 

By the end of this module, the optometric assistant will be able to: 

  • Collect and document relevant patient case history information. 
  • Perform and record distance and near visual acuity measurements accurately. 
  • Apply infection control practices in an optometric setting. 
  • Explain the purpose of common pre-testing procedures and their clinical relevance. 
  • Prepare patients and equipment for accurate pre-testing. 
  • Recognize common sources of error, abnormal findings, or situations requiring follow-up.
