McMaster Children’s Hospital, located in Hamilton’s west-end, is the second largest children’s hospital in Canada. We are home to the fastest-growing kids-only emergency department in Ontario, one of Canada’s most advanced neonatal intensive care units, and a range of programs and clinics with unique expertise in a number of areas including children’s cancer, digestive diseases, and mental health.
The 3V2 Pediatric Ophthalmology Clinic provides special eye care needs to both pediatric and adult populations in Hamilton and the surrounding area. The clinic is comprised of specialists and sub specialists who provide both evaluation and treatment of certain conditions within this population.
Position Summary
The Orthoptist within the Pediatric Ophthalmology Clinic will provide a precise evaluation of vision loss and eye muscle abnormalities for pediatric and adult patients. The Orthoptist will assist in diagnosing conditions, develop, and implement treatment management plans to help improve the patients’ vision or visual comfort. The Orthoptist works with the interdisciplinary clinical team and may act as liaison between the Ophthalmologist and the patient/family in developing a successful treatment plan.
Schedule Work Hours
Monday to Friday; days.
This position is temporary until May 2026.
Qualifications
- Certification from a recognized institution (Canadian Ophthalmological Society/Canadian Orthoptic Council) in Orthoptics
- Experience working as an Orthoptist including evaluation and treatment of disorders of VA (Visual Acuities), eye movements and alignment in children and adults
- Competency with visual acuities, stereopsis, IOP (Intraocular pressures), Goldmann's, evaluation of pupils, alternate prism cover test, ocular motility, and lensometry
- Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with up to date techniques of non-surgical treatments for amblyopia strabismus and diplopia
- Demonstrated knowledgeable and experience in evaluating disorders affecting visual function
- Demonstrated knowledge in visual fields, OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), fundus photography, pachymetry, and B-Scans
- Demonstrated teaching skills required to provide patient education and care direction
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets and hospital based operating system
- Knowledge of medical terminology as required
- Knowledge and skill in office procedures and equipment use related to ophthalmology
- Demonstrated effective communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills within an interdisciplinary team environment
- Effective problem solving abilities
