McMaster Children’s Hospital, located in Hamilton’s west-end, is the second largest children’s hospital in Canada. We are home to the fastest-growing kids-only emergency department in Ontario, one of Canada’s most advanced neonatal intensive care units, and a range of programs and clinics with unique expertise in a number of areas including children’s cancer, digestive diseases, and mental health.
Position Summary
The Ophthalmology Clinic provides a fast-paced ophthalmic care to pediatrics and subspecialty neonatal clinics within the McMaster Children's Hospital. The Ophthalmic Technician performs duties on neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients, supporting several ophthalmologists and orthoptists. The technician will perform independent testing of clients for various vision tests, as well as provide appropriate supervision and maintenance of ophthalmology equipment.
Schedule Work Hours
Monday to Friday; days. Evening and weekends may be required.
Qualifications
- Ophthalmic Technician Certificate from an accredited academic institution
- International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) certification preferred
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate
- Preferred previous experience in an ophthalmologist office or hospital setting as an Ophthalmic Technician or Orthoptist
- Preferred previous experience working with pediatric population
- Demonstrated experience and competence with the following equipment: Humphrey Visual Field, OCT Fundus photography, ERG, VEP, Pachymeter, I-care and Auto Refractor.
- International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) certification preferred
- Demonstrated computer experience
- Demonstrated knowledge in assisting physicians with vision, pressures, history taking and neutralizing glasses
- Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology
- Demonstrates teaching skills required to provide patient education
- Demonstrated ability to assist in minor procedures related to the eye clinic
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn new equipment
- Demonstrates effective communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills within an interdisciplinary team
- Effective problem solving abilities
