Depending on the province, an optometrist can prescribe medication to treat:
- bacterial and viral eye infections,
- eyelid infections and inflammation, like blepharitis and styes;
- inflammation of the eye itself, like anterior uveitis;
- eye pain from dry eyes;
- conjunctivitis (pink eye),
- glaucoma;
- red, sore, irritated eyes from wearing contact lenses; and
- conditions before and after cataract or refractive surgery.
If you experience discomfort, redness, itchiness, swelling, blurred vision, or other symptoms, it is important to get your eyes checked by an optometrist. Check with your optometrist to see if they hold same-day appointments in their schedules for eye care emergencies.
