Are Glasses for Computer Use Really Neccessary?

Hi There, Thank you for taking time to answer my question! I am a 39 year old female with no health condition and never had glasses. Last week I had an eye exam and it's revealed that my vision is 0.25 in left eye and 0.50 in right eye astigmatism. Because I have some headaches and I work a lot in front of the computer, the optometrist suggested a very expensive lense"nikon relaxsee" which has no vision correction in the left lense but just 0.50 for my right lense and I was told that this is just to help your eyes to feel more relaxed! and adopt with glasses for future when I need glasses for reading! the lense itself is $400.00 and on top of that a frame obviously. I have one pair of eyes and if it's necessary I have no hesitation to get it but I am not sure about it. Please help me with an answer.

    Dr Joan Hansen's response:

    Gollar,
When working on a computer (or any close up reading) any imbalance in the two eyes can cause problems with focusing and thus lead to headaches. On a computer you will always be most comfortable with any lens that has an anti-reflective coating to decrease glare from overhead lights. This new lens that has been recommended, is designed to decrease distortion as much as possible. I understand your concern about cost, and perhaps the people making your glasses can show you a lens to demonstrate the difference between a regular lens and this particular one.
