RE: ASTIGMATISM AND CONTACT LENSES

Can lenses cause astigmatism to get worst? i have astigmatism since i was little. I wore glasses for 14 years and it just get worst. So now i put lenses on. i have ciba vision toric monthly lenses for astigmatism but there are no marks on them. i wrote to ciba vision and they answer me that their toric lenses have no marks.I experience blurriness so i was wondering if my vision can get worst because of that.
Dr Carol Doman's response:
Hi Oliver, If by lenses you mean contact lenses, these will not make astigmatism worse. On the same note, if your vision is a bit blurry while wearing the contact lenses, this will not make the astigmatism worse. Almost all toric contact lenses (contact lenses that correct for astigmatism) have very small markings on the lens, so that your Optometrist can see if the contact lens is fitting properly. Sometimes these are not visible with the naked eye. If your vision is blurry it could be that the contact lenses you have may not be fitting properly. Or if you have a large amount of astigmatism the contact lenses may not be fully correcting your vision, which would also cause blur. Depending on what your prescription is you may always see clearer with your glasses compared to your contact lenses. If the blur with the contact lenses is bothersome my advice would be to visit your Optometrist to see if your contact lenses can be modified to make your vision clearer or if trying a different type of contact lens may be beneficial.
